There was a queen by the northern sea,
北の海辺に女王がいた
With a crown of pearl and bone
真珠と骨の冠を戴いて
She stood before her people dry-eyed,
民の前で涙ひとつ見せずに立っていた
Hard as harbor stone
港の石のように固く

No tear for famine, no tear for war,
飢饉にも涙せず 戦にも涙せず
No tear at the funeral bell
葬いの鐘にも涙しなかった
She kept her grief behind her teeth
彼女は悲しみを歯の裏に押し込めていた
Where no living soul could tell
生きている誰にも悟られぬ場所に

“If she can stand, then we can stand,”
「女王が立っていられるなら 私たちも立っていられる」
The widows used to say
未亡人たちはそう言っていた
Yet no one saw the salt she saved
けれど誰も見てはいなかった
For a darker, deeper day
彼女がもっと暗く深い日のために溜めていた塩を

Then came the storm with a blackened mouth,
やがて黒ずんだ口をした嵐が来た
Then came the broken mast,
折れたマストが流れ着いた
Then came the gulls without a cry,
鳴き声を失った鴎たちが来た
And no ships sailing past

The queen came down at midnight tide,
女王は真夜中の潮の時刻に下りてきた
No guards beside her feet
足元に衛兵を伴わず
She carried every sailor’s name
すべての船乗りの名を携えていた
On linen, white and neat
白く整った亜麻布に記して

She climbed the hill to Lachryma
彼女はラクリマの丘へ登った
While thunder broke the bay
雷が湾を裂く中で
And read them one by one aloud
そしてひとつずつ声に出して読み上げた
So none could wash away
どの名も洗い流されぬように

At the name of the youngest boy,
いちばん幼い少年の名に差しかかったとき
Her guarded heart broke fast
守り固めていた心はたちまち砕けた
And all the tears of seven years
そして七年分の涙がすべて
Fell hotter than the blast
嵐の息より熱く落ちた

By dawn, the leaves of Lachryma
夜明けには ラクリマの葉は
Were jeweled bright with brine
海の塩に宝石のように輝いていた
Each vein was rimmed with crystal salt,
葉脈のひとつひとつは結晶の塩で縁取られ
Each edge with silver shine
その縁は銀色に光っていた

She gathered one leaf only,
彼女は一枚だけ葉を摘んだ
Not for crown or throne
冠のためでも玉座のためでもなく
But for the first widow at the harbor,
港で待つ最初の未亡人のために
Waiting there alone
ただひとりでそこに立つ彼女のために

When the widow touched it,
未亡人がそれに触れたとき
She tasted storm and sea
嵐と海の味がした
The name of the man she loved,
愛した男の名の味がした
And the queen’s grief equally
そして女王の悲しみをも 同じだけ味わった

That was the miracle:
それこそが奇跡だった
Not safety
安全ではなく
Not return
帰還でもなく

But sorrow shared without shame
恥じることなく分かち合われた悲しみだった

Since then, before the fishing boats
それ以来 漁船が
Set out beyond the bay
湾の外へ漕ぎ出す前に
A salted leaf from Lachryma
ラクリマの塩を帯びた葉が
Is tied where ropes give way
縄がほどける場所に結ばれるようになった

For not all charms prevent the storm,
すべての護符が嵐を防ぐわけではない
But some remember dead
けれど死者を覚えているものもある
And every wave that reaches it
そしてそこへ届くすべての波は
Must pass through every name instead
まずすべての名をくぐらねばならない

When night grows black with rain,
夜が雨で黒く染まり
And stars refuse to burn
星々が燃えることを拒むとき
The salt leaf shines a little blue
塩の葉はわずかに青く光る
To guide the vessel’s turn
船の舵取りを導くために

Lift the leaf to the mast
その葉をマストへ掲げよ
Let the lost sail beside us
失われた者たちを私たちの傍らに航らせよ
Till the black waves pass
